19 dead, 25 injured as bus carrying tourists falls from Nepal hillside

A 24-year-old British man was among 19 people killed when a bus carrying tourists crashed in Nepal early Monday, police said.

The bus, travelling from Pokhara to the capital, Kathmandu, lost control and fell about 200 meters onto the bank of the Trishuli river in central Dhading district.

There were 44 people on board, including the driver, and 25 were injured. All injured passengers have been taken to hospitals in Kathmandu.

Nepalese authorities said they had identified nine of the bodies so far. Among the dead, a Chinese citizen has also been reported by the Chinese embassy, though Nepalese authorities have not confirmed this.

Injured passengers include a Chinese national and a New Zealander. Police spokesman Abinarayan Kafle told BBC Nepali that 17 people died at the scene and two more died while receiving treatment.

The UK Foreign Office said it is assisting the family of the Briton who died. “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Nepal and are in contact with the local authorities,” a spokesman said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash. Road accidents are common in Nepal due to narrow mountain roads and poor road maintenance.

In 2024, a similar bus accident killed at least 14 people on a route from Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Nepal is a popular destination for international visitors, especially climbers, as it provides access to the Himalayas and Mount Everest.

Climbing fees alone brought in $5.9 million (£4.4m) in 2024, making mountaineering a significant source of revenue for the country.
