The Oyo State Police Command has detained as well as questioned a member of the Special Response Squad and the team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, for their alleged involvement in the extortion of N300,000 from a resident in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement made available to the newsmen in Ibadan on Wednesday.
Ayanlade said, “In respect of the transfer receipt circulated by @Hon. Jesugbemi and others alleging extortion by operatives of the Special Response Squad, the Oyo State Police command immediately initiated a comprehensive investigation into the allegation.
“Following diligent internal review, the officer directly involved has been identified, defaulted, and is currently in detention pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings.
“The team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, has also been formally queried in line with established regulations. It is important to categorically state that the entire sum of ₦300,000 alleged to have been extorted has been fully recovered.
“The affected individual is therefore urged to come forward to reclaim the recovered money and voluntarily make a formal statement to enable the command conclude its investigation and impose appropriate disciplinary sanctions.
“In the second instance involving officers stationed at a Bank, Bodija, who were alleged to have extorted the sum of ₦300,000, the officers concerned have equally been identified and detained for proper internal investigation and orderly room trial.
“The affected individual in this case has formally lodged a complaint, and the matter is being processed in accordance with due disciplinary procedures,” the PPRO explained.
