Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on journalists across Nigeria to remain committed to objectivity and the ethical standards of their profession.
He made the appeal on Sunday at his palace in Sokoto while receiving members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, who paid him the traditional Sallah homage.
The Sultan emphasised the need for media practitioners to carry out their constitutional responsibilities with diligence, patriotism, and integrity.
He cautioned journalists against abandoning professional ethics, stressing that responsible reporting is essential for national peace, unity, security, and socio-economic development.
He also urged journalists not to emulate unregulated social media practices, which he said often lack adherence to ethical standards and objectivity.
The monarch congratulated journalists and other Muslims on the successful completion of the Ramadan fast, urging gratitude to Almighty Allah for the opportunity to witness the festive period.
Earlier, the NUJ Chairman in the state, Usman Mohammed Binji, said the visit was to felicitate with the Sultan and members of the Sultanate Council on the successful conclusion of Ramadan and the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
Binji commended the Sultan for his consistent media-friendly disposition and assured him of the union’s commitment to maintaining a cordial working relationship with the Sultanate Council.
